Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, whose possible visit to Turkey had been debated for days, decided not to come, citing a programme planned in advance.
According to journalist Saygı Öztürk, Aliyev will not be at the 13th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Organisation of Turkic States, to be held in Ankara today, on 30 October.
The question of students in Azerbaijan not being admitted to schools while wearing the headscarf had taken on another dimension with statements by presidential chief adviser Oktay Saral.
Sharp criticism of Aliyev had also come from inside the AKP.
The Baku administration, in diplomatic language but sharply, had also warned the AKP and the Palace.
The message was: “Do not interfere in our internal affairs.” After this tension, President Erdoğan telephoned Aliyev and personally invited him to the summit.
After the call he dismissed Oktay Saral from the palace.
Statements about Azerbaijan by AKP figures were cut off at once.
None of this calmed Aliyev’s anger.
At the Organisation of Turkic States summit, Azerbaijan will be represented in Ilham Aliyev’s place by Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.
Aliyev, on 30 October, will present awards to the finalists of the first FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival, held in Baku.
